Desktop App Starter Prompt

Build a native Windows program with Python and tkinter: one folder with the exe and its _internal folder, settings, folders, colour sets and four languages. No browser anywhere. Made from what worked, and what went wrong, in my own projects.

Want a real Windows program, not a website? This prompt guides Claude step by step.

How it works

  1. Open your project folder in Claude Code (not on OneDrive).
  2. Add the prompt file and its Skills folder to your project folder.
  3. Type: "Execute this prompt."
  4. Answer its questions. Nothing is built before you say "go".

What's inside

The prompt has 23 sections:

  1. Check the tools and skills first (before any question or plan)
  2. My app (fill in what you know — empty is fine)
  3. Non-negotiable: a native window, never a browser
  4. Environment (Windows)
  5. Project structure
  6. Where files live (never inside the app folder)
  7. Build and packaging
  8. Start-up sequence (in this order — each step fixed a real bug)
  9. Main window layout
  10. Settings window (⚙) — tabs
  11. Colour sets (themes)
  12. Pop-up windows — not flat, never hidden
  13. Languages
  14. Data files
  15. Documents the app writes
  16. Robustness
  17. Terms of use, About, help
  18. Versions, releases and GitHub (optional, recommended)
  19. Demo data, tests and checks
  20. Manual
  21. Project memory and way of working
  22. Traps we already paid for (avoid them)
  23. First task for you (Claude)
